Shakespeare is said to have used 21,000 different words in his written works while the average vocabulary of citizens at that time was only 500 and the average today is around 2,000!

Langston Hughes came from a family who thought his dream of becoming a writer was "impractical" ... good thing he didn't listen!

Upon her death, Emily Dickinson's family discovered 40 handbound volumes of nearly 1800 of her poems. These booklets were made by folding and sewing five or six sheets of stationery paper.  The handwritten poems show a variety of dash-like marks of various sizes and directions that some believe to have some unknown meaning.

Language Arts News!

Happy New Year!
 1/18- 1/27
7th Grade: The students will be reading a novel titled, House on Mango Street.  While reading, they will be examing character development and analyzing deeper meaning through symbolism in the story.
8th Grade: The students will begin the steps of writing a research report.  They will be learning what an informative report is and then they will apply these steps in order to create their own research report.
9th Grade: The students will begin reading one of my personal favorite non-fiction novels, Night. This is a first-hand account of a Jew who was put in a concentration camp during the Holocaust.  The students will be doing research over the Holocaust and analyzing both the historical elements of the story along with the literary elements of the story.
